The new Hannaford supermarket in Augusta has earned a platinum LEED designation -- the highest level of environmental and energy conscious design conferred by the U.S. Green Building Council.
It is the first supermarket to gain that distinction in the country and will serve as a learning laboratory for the Scarborough-based Hannaford Bros. Co.'s other 168 stores in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont, Fred Conlogue, director of design services for the chain, told the Associated Press. The Hannaford store integrates geothermal, solar and photovoltaic systems with recycled materials throughout. It opens to the public Saturday.
The Washington-based Green Building Council, whose membership includes building industry advocates for use of energy-saving and cost-efficient construction, has awarded 167 platinum projects worldwide and 153 in the United States, according to the AP.
