Owner Leonard Nason Jr., 86, has owned the 78-acre property on which the quarries are located, accessible from Winthrop Street near the Manchester line, for more than 50 years. He decided to list it for sale when it became too much for him to manage. The active quarries have an asking price of $5.5 million, Nason said, and a lot more granite to be mined. “You could get your money right back,” he said of the asking price. Nason, the owner of Hallowell Granite Works, plans to keep his Winthrop Street home near the quarries and other granite deposits in Manchester he owns. Some seventeen titles were published here and circulation at its height reached, by some estimates, over three million. The magazines were mailed to subscribers all over the country and the volume prompted construction of a new post office at 295 Water Street, which opened in January of 1890. The major publications were mail-order magazines intended primarily for women--rural women in particular--but some included articles for men and children. Farm and literary magazines were other genres published in Augusta. Home and family life was the primary focus for the majority of the publications and included down-home advice on family life, decorating, business (raising chickens, for example), personal care, health, fashion, and the latest trends. AUGUSTA - It's been 24 years since despondence last took a life on the Memorial Bridge. It's been 23 years since the construction of a suicide-prevention fence. And it's been a little more than one year since the chain-link fence was taken down, unveiling gorgeous views of the Kennebec River, the Capitol dome, and Augusta's historic arsenal. As soon as this week, those scenic vistas will start to disappear, as the Maine Department of Transportation, which removed the fence to allow for bridge repairs, begins rebuilding the only suicide barrier on a bridge in Maine. The fence's return follows a citywide conversation about Augusta's self-image, the nature of depression, changes in the state's mental-health system, and the question of whether Maine's capital city can move beyond its painful past.
