Brewer plans Augusta conference center:

The owner of a pair of breweries has bought the Gov. John F. Hill House in Augusta and plans to turn it into a conference center.

Geoff Houghton, owner of The Liberal Cup in Hallowell and Run of the Mill Public House & Brewery in Saco, bought the 28,000-square-foot historic building Wednesday, according to the Kennebec Journal. The building, also known as the St. Paul Center, was formerly owned by Catholic Charities of Maine and used as case management and therapy offices. The city accessed the 1.34-acre property at $3.1 million, but it was listed by CB Richard Ellis/The Boulos Co. last fall for sale at $1.3 million.

Houghton plans to use the building to house banquets, conferences and weddings for up to 200 people. The Liberal Cup chef will provide the catering, according to the paper.
