Augusta seizes mill

The city of Augusta has taken ownership of the former Augusta Tissue mill, known for years as Statler Tissue, with plans to raze the old buildings and redevelop the 17-acre riverside property.

The mill was abandoned by Augusta Tissue LLC in 2001, and the company owes the city about $650,000 in taxes and interest, the Kennebec Journal reported. The city foreclosed on the property at midnight on Monday.

After the mill is demolished, the equipment auctioned off and the site cleaned up of pollutants, the city will begin seeking redevelopment proposals from developers, the paper reported.
